Arsenal 3-2 Aston Villa + Dealine Day thoughts + Champions League vs FA cup

It wasn't a stunning performance, particularly in the first half but it was a win none the less and in a cup game thats all that matters. In the first half we just didn't turn up. It wasn't our most shockingly awful performance of the season. I think that award goes to one particular game that shouldnt be mentioned, but when we concede two in forty five minutes at home to Villa and score none, you know it isn't the best day in the office. Something was clearly said at half time. Heads were rattled and words were exchanged. It helped. We came out a different team and within fifteen minutes we were in front. The FA cup this season is our only realistic chance of a trophy and we needed to come out the dressing room as a different team and in fairness that's what we did. You could say that we got a bit lucky but we haven't been given many penalties by referees lately so Sunday made a nice change. It was important to get back to winning ways and the consequences of losing this game could have been disastrous, mentally and in terms of our season. Hopefully the comeback will have given us confidence and we can kick on from here in the League.
Then theres the whole top four or FA cup debate that rumbles on between fans but that's irrelevant when we're playing the games. We should have the depth to be able to compete on two fronts and I think it is possible for us to go for both. Our competitors for fourth, Chelsea, Liverpool, the spuds all remain in the competition. So why can't we fight to beat them in the FA cup and the league? For me Champions League qualification is the main goal for this season and I have no doubt that this will remain the case. For a start theres the money. Around thirty million is gained just from qualifying and whilst Im confident we wouldnt meet any financial problems, for the fans calling for Arsene to spend, losing thirty million certianly wouldn't help. I don't think its just spending or a lack of that gets on people's nerves but more that we dont always go for "super quality". Players like, for example, Juan Mata have escaped our grasp in recent seasons and that's frustrated fans even more. If we don't qualify for the Champions League players of this calibre, Hazard, Gotze etc aren't going to want to join us in a million years (not that I think they will anyway). Therefore it makes it very difficult to get back into the Champions League. Look at Liverpool for example, theyve spent over a hundred million on transfers but the best they could attract has been Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll. Winning the FA cup would be a brilliant moment, ending these trophyless years, but I worry that not qualifying for the Champions League would mean that we can't challenge for honours in the longer term.
Onto deadline day and personally I dont really like it. It's just any other day of the transfer window hyped up by sky to get viewers. The way they try to make the most boring deadline day interesting is laughable and I'd rather spend my time watching actual football rather than Jim White blabbling on about Danny Higginbotham  going to Nottingham Forest on loan. Plus it almost always doesn't involve anything from Arsenal. I imagine the last window was our biggest taste of any new deadline day toys for a good few years now so i won't be getting my hopes up for a while. It would be nice to sign someone, which by now we certainly wont, as we need a boost going into the final half of the season. Theres talk of Arshavin going off to Anzhi but the Russian transfer window closes in three weeks so don't panic if nothing happens tonight. He clearly has no future at the club. The fans have turned against him and I think its either now or in the summer that he leaves us. Actually we did make one signing. 19 year old Thomas Eisfield joined from Dortmund with a fee of around 600K. Personally iv never heard of him and he's never made a first team appearence for Dortmund. So let's just hope he saves our season.
